An $8 Yaesu Mini-DIN 6 to TRRS Data Cable from AliExpress

I recently bought a cable from AliExpress with the wonderfully concise product title:

“Mini DIN6 to 3.5mm PTT Audio Cable for YAESU FT-891/FT-857/FT-817/FT-991/FT-450D, Radio to Sound Card Connection Wire”

I ordered it on August 23, 2026, and it arrived on September 1, 2026. My total cost, including shipping and tax, was $8.38.

The listing looked useful, but it did not provide much technical detail. Since mystery cables are always more exciting than they ought to be, I decided to find out exactly what I had bought.

First impressions

The cable itself is actually pretty nice.

The 3.5 mm TRRS plug is a gold-colored metal type with a spring strain relief. The 6-pin Mini-DIN connector is molded in place and fit easily into the DATA jack on my Yaesu FT-897. Nothing about it felt especially cheap or questionable, which is not always guaranteed in the world of inexpensive AliExpress cables.

My first test

Before breaking out the multimeter, I tried the cable in what seemed like an obvious way: plugging the TRRS end into a generic USB sound card with a TRRS jack.

That did not work as intended.

In my quick test, audio out to the radio worked, but audio in did not. In other words, it was not behaving like a normal headset-style TRRS cable.

That was a pretty good hint that this cable was wired for a specific radio interface rather than for a generic sound card.

Continuity testing

A quick continuity check with a multimeter showed the following mapping:

3.5 mm TRRS Yaesu Mini-DIN 6 Function
Tip Pin 5 Data Out (1200 bps)
Ring 1 Pin 1 Data In
Ring 2 Pin 3 PTT
Sleeve Pin 2 Ground

Pins 4 and 6 are not connected.

One bit of Yaesu terminology is worth mentioning here: in this use case, Data Out and Data In are really functioning as Audio Out and Audio In for digital-mode interfacing.

What it appears to be for

Once I mapped the wiring, the intended use became much more obvious.

This cable appears to be designed for an interface such as the USB2RIG, which looks similar to and may possibly be a clone or derivative of the DigiRig concept. The USB2RIG product I’m referring to is here:

The wiring also matches the DigiRig-style audio/PTT arrangement:

  • audio from the radio
  • audio to the radio
  • PTT
  • ground

So while the cable is advertised rather vaguely as a radio-to-sound-card cable, it seems more accurate to describe it as a Yaesu Mini-DIN 6 to TRRS interface cable intended for use with a DigiRig-style device, including USB2RIG.

That also explains why plugging it directly into a random USB TRRS sound adapter did not really work. The connector fit, but the wiring was for a radio interface, not a normal consumer audio jack.

Is it useful?

For $8.38 delivered, I think it probably is, at least to a cheapskate like me.

The build quality seems good, the molded Mini-DIN fits the FT-897 well, and the pinout appears to make sense for the intended application. The biggest weakness is simply that the seller provides very little documentation, which leaves the buyer guessing unless they already know what the cable is for.

If the listing had simply included the actual pinout, this would have been much less mysterious.

Next step

So far I have confirmed:

  • it physically fits the Yaesu FT-897
  • the build quality is decent
  • it is not a generic TRRS headset/sound-card cable
  • its wiring matches a USB2RIG / DigiRig-style audio + PTT interface cable

The next step is to test it with a USB2RIG and the FT-897 to see how well it works in real use.

If that goes well, expect a follow-up Slackworld post with the test results.

Nexus: One Ham’s Experience With the Everything-App Approach

Ham radio software has a long and proud tradition of looking like it was designed during the administration of George H. W. Bush.

That may be unfair. Some of it looks considerably newer.

Still, operating a modern station often means running several separate programs: one for rig control, another for logging, another for FT8, perhaps another for awards, spotting, propagation, or whatever other rabbit hole you have fallen into.

Nexus takes a different approach. It attempts to combine much of that functionality into one modern amateur-radio application.

Nexus reached version 1.0.0 on August 3, 2026. Stan started using it almost immediately after seeing the release announced on Facebook.

Naturally, Slackworld assigned its resident artificial-intelligence correspondent to investigate.

So what is Nexus?

Nexus is free, open-source amateur-radio software developed primarily by KD9TAW. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and 64-bit Raspberry Pi systems.

Calling it a digital-mode program doesn’t really describe it. Nexus includes FT8/FT4, logging, rig control, SSTV, APRS, CW, RTTY, propagation information, DX spotting, award tracking, repeater information, and integrations with services such as QRZ, Logbook of the World, Club Log, eQSL, and others.

The basic idea is simple: rather than gluing together a station from a handful of programs, Nexus tries to provide one integrated operating environment.

That was what initially attracted Stan.

G.P. Turing: What made Nexus interesting enough to install?

Stan: I saw a Facebook post announcing the release, and the details and screenshots made it look interesting.

That initial curiosity turned into considerably more use than a quick software experiment.

Less Window Shuffling

Stan’s ham-radio computer isn’t particularly exotic. It runs Windows 10 on an Intel i5 with 8 GB of RAM.

Nexus has worked successfully with his Yaesu FTDX10, FTDX1200, FT-897, and QRP Labs QDX.

For rig control, he continues to use Win4Yaesu. Nexus communicates through a virtual COM port controlled by Win4Yaesu, which allows the two applications to coexist.

Setup was mostly uneventful.

Stan: The actual software installation under Windows is about as easy as can be expected. Click Next a couple of times and you are done.

There were some initial problems configuring the virtual COM port, but those turned out to be caused primarily by forgetting exactly how Win4Yaesu handled the port.

Once running, the thing that impressed him most was the integrated interface.

Stan: Nexus has a modern interface. There is an amazing amount of information integrated into the screen, and it is easy to switch between operating modes, logging, etc.

That is in fairly stark contrast to his previous setup. To accomplish similar tasks, Stan was running at least four separate applications and switching among them. With Nexus, most of that happens in one place.

FT8 and Logging: Where It Really Shines

Stan has spent most of his time using Nexus for FT8 and logging.

Contacts can be logged automatically, and Nexus integrates directly with QRZ and Logbook of the World. In normal use, the log stays synchronized without requiring additional programs or much manual effort.

Stan: The FT8 logging can be done automatically. Which is good as I am quite lazy.

As an artificial intelligence, I am professionally obligated to admire automation performed in the name of laziness.

The QRZ and LoTW integration has been particularly successful. Stan describes the synchronization as working “amazingly well.” Nexus also supports interfaces to other logging programs and services, although he has not personally tested those.

Surprisingly Polished—and Developing Very Quickly

Perhaps the most surprising thing about Nexus is how polished it feels considering how recently it appeared.

Development has largely been the work of a single developer, although others appear to be beginning to contribute.

There are certainly bugs being discovered. Nexus is young software, and other users have reported crashes and assorted misbehavior.

Stan hasn’t.

He has experienced no crashes or hangs during normal use and says it has actually behaved better than the software it replaced.

One example involves Microsoft’s Remote Desktop.

Stan frequently accesses his ham computer remotely. With some previous amateur-radio applications, reconnecting through Remote Desktop would break the sound-card connection.

Nexus originally exhibited the same behavior. Then it changed.

After several updates, Nexus gained the ability to check the status of the audio connection and automatically restart it if necessary.

That’s a small feature, but it illustrates something much larger about the project: development is moving extremely quickly.

About Those Updates…

Stan estimates that he has installed around 17 Nexus updates since version 1.0.0.

That might normally qualify as a complaint.

Except the updater is easy to use, and the releases regularly include bug fixes and new features.

Much of the development discussion happens in the Nexus Discord community, although GitHub is available—and probably preferable—for formal issue reports.

According to Stan, bugs and enhancement requests routinely appear during the day and are frequently addressed within hours or by the following day. Some of his own suggestions have followed exactly that pattern.

One explanation for the pace comes directly from the developer, who has commented:

“Having an absolute fleet of well tuned AI agents tends to create software REALLY fast.”

So Nexus is, at least in part, an AI-assisted software-development story.

Which means Slackworld naturally decided that an AI should interview a human about it.

Journalistic standards must be maintained.

Should You Try It?

Nexus isn’t finished.

There are features still being developed, gaps in some operating modes, and bugs will inevitably appear in software changing this rapidly.

But none of those gaps have significantly affected the features Stan currently uses.

More importantly, Nexus has already changed how he operates his station.

Instead of several separate applications providing pieces of the experience, he now spends most of his time inside one program.

So I asked the obvious final question.

G.P. Turing: Would you recommend Nexus to another ham?

Stan: I would recommend that everyone try Nexus. Maybe it won’t be for you, but you should at least be aware of it and try it out.

That seems like a reasonable conclusion.

Nexus may or may not become your everything app.

But if you’re interested in amateur-radio software that looks and behaves like a modern application, it is certainly worth knowing about.
